Time for another multimedia narrative from the Brooklyn based folks at Mediastorm. Exodus tells the story of Diana Ortiz, 45, who served 22 years in prison. She dropped out of high school at 18 to live with a man twice her age. To pay for their drug habit, her boyfriend devised a scheme to lure a man into a secluded Coney Island parking lot and rob him. In the early hours of August 20, 1983, the robbery veered off-course and two men were shot. One was killed. Though Diana was not at the scene of the shooting, she was sentenced to 17 years to life for her role in the murder. While behind bars Diana earned her master’s degree, developed a strong identity and self confidence. She is now an inspiration for other inmates, helping them to rebuild their lives.
Today, we will be writing your professional biographies. Designers often keep their professional work on-line in their professional portfolios. You can see some examples below:
Here is the website from the design firm Crush Lovely:

These Professional Portfolio’s always include a professional biography. You will be writing your own today to be included on your class blog and on your New Design High School Portfolio. We will revise these several times before we put them on-line. You are writing about yourself as a professional so make it high quality.

Cat Island! from Radio Rookies on Vimeo.
WNYC’s Radio Rookies partnered with the NYC Salt teen photography program to create multimedia stories documenting Roosevelt Island’s Main Street. The SALT NYC program included New Design High graduates Christian R., Nora M. and Devin O. As part of the program Christian made a short documentary about Roosevelt Island. Many New Yorkers know little about Roosevelt Island besides that the tram takes you there. Over the course of a 6-week intensive workshop, the Short Wave Rookie Reporters found all kinds of fascinating stories on this island that’s so close, yet so different from the rest of the city. Their stories are part of a collaboration with the Mapping Main Street project which aims to collect stories from all of the more than 10,000 streets named Main in the United States.
NYC Salt is looking for participants for this year.

We begin class by getting our first exposure to a multimedia narrative from the folks at Mediastorm. Kingsley’s Crossing tells of a man’s journey from Africa to Europe.
Mediastorm, located in Dumbo in Brooklyn, was founded in 1994 focused on creating cinematic narratives utilizing animation, audio, video and photography. The website says, “we publish diverse narratives that speak to the heart of the human condition.” The human condition refers to the distinctive features that are common to most human lives, and the features that are inevitable to all people or groups of people. When we speak of the human condition we are speaking of bigger questions that affect us individually and all people. These are things like joy and happiness, fear and terror, being and existence as well as questions about the purpose of life: What is the meaning of living? Why was I born? Why am I here? Why is the world like it is? Why is there injustice in the world?
In this course students will design one multimedia narrative that focuses on bringing attention to critical issues facing their local community, New York City, the United States and/or the world. Students will have to choose one issue that they would like to deeply understand and make sense of. It will be a complex issue facing the world today, and in the future, and using information from different fields such as philosophy, economics, psychology, cultural studies, anthropology and sociology, they will research the issue in hopes of bringing more complex and deeper understanding and awareness of the issue. Students will have to make sense of the complex issues they study and present their understandings in a multimedia narrative through the use of video, audio, photography, statistics and text. Students will also be responsible for publishing a blog that will inform readers about their research. Students, in production teams of three, will also design branding web sites around their videos.
Check out what a multimedia narrative looks like from our Mediastorm class teams in the past.

Photo Blog
The fourth blog for this quarter is similar to your Newspaper Blog, Newsagency Blog and Multimedia Blog. However, this blog entry will be focused on a photo essay on the topic you are researching. Photo Essays are a powerful way to capture the totality of events that print or video cannot do. To see an example of this check out NY Times Photo Essay of Japan After Earthquake and Tsunami. You ca read more about photo essays on Wikipedia Photo Essay.
Photo Essays are not easy to find so you will have to be savvy about your research. Here are examples from the different options you have:
Magazines
Newspapers
Photo Journalists Sites
The blog should have link to the photo essay in it and one of the images from the essay at the top of blog. Below the image should be three paragraphs:
- Paragraph 1 introduce the reader to the photo essay including the photographer and give some context about the essay including when and where was the photo essay shot and for what reason.
- Paragraph 2 should summarize the images to the reader.
- Paragraph 3 will tell the reader why the essay is significant and what it shows us.
Weekly Advice March 7th
We are in the heart of the 3rd quarter and you should be in the heart of your project. As I said last week:
When managing a large project you need to keep organized and take full advantage of opportunities to get slices of the project done. Fall even a little behind and it means you are opening yourself to falling very far behind. Falling very far behind means you will likely not be able to get caught up. Work hard to stay on top of the work.
Here is what I would suggest you have completed by the end of this week:
- Newspaper Blog
- News Agency Blog
- Multimedia Blog
- Preproduction Workshop
- Interview Workshop
- Interview Footage
- B Roll Footage
- Photographs
If you are staying up on your work you would finish the following work this week:
- Mulitmedia Blog
- Interview Workshop
- 20 Original Photo Series
- Individually I would suggest:
Adrian: Complete blogs for 1st semester.
Adrienne: Confirm new topic. Newspaper Blog, Newsagency Blog. Film Interviews.

Multimedia Blog
The third blog you can work on is very similar to the first two except instead of reading a newspaper article you will be watching a video on your topic. This will be a difficult blog as finding video on your topic may be difficult. You may use the featured length documentaries, shorter documentaries, multimedia videos from news organizations or television shows. The following sites may have a video for you.
- Check Out Top Documentary Films
- Interactive Narratives
- Kobreguide
- Multimedia Muse
- Multimedia Shooter
- Pic TV
The blog should have link to the video in it and an image at the top of blog. Below the image I would think that 3 paragraphs would work:
- Paragraph introducing the video to the reader including the source. You will then introduce the video to the reader with a line like…….The video explores the recent issue of teen obesity. You will also tell the reader why the issue is important……….Teen obesity had become an important issue as the health dangers for teens who grow up obese are increasing.
- Paragraph that summarizes the video and its content and any important stats or quotes for the reader.
- Paragraph that connects information in the article to larger issues and the significance of the content of the video.
It may be tough to find a video so let me help you if you need it.
Let me know when you finish also,

News Agency Blog
The second blog you can work on is very similar to the first. The blog asks you to find an article on your research topic, read it and then write about it for your blog readers. Instead of being from a major newspaper, as was the first blog, it should be from a major news agency. A news agency collects news reports for newspapers and distributes them electronically so that other new organizations can use them. News agencies were established by journalists to supply news reports to newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasters. Such an agency may also be referred to as a wire service, newswire or news service. You can see a list of news agencies at Wiki Pedia News Agency Lists. The most well know agencies are Associated Press (AP), Reuters, United Press International.
The blog should have link to the article in it and an image at the top of blog. Below the image should be three paragraphs:
- Paragraph introducing the article to the reader including the source (Newspaper), writer and the topic. You will then introduce the article to the reader with a line like…….The article explores the recent issue of teen obesity. You will also tell the reader why the issue is important……….Teen obesity had become an important issue as the health dangers for teens who grow up obese are increasing.
- Paragraph 2 summarizes the article, and its content, and any important stats or quotes for the reader.
- Paragraph 3 connects information in the article to larger issues and the significance of the content of the article.
Let me know when you finish,
